1908

In the Spring of 1908, or to be more precise, on March 16th, an informal gathering of Freemasons then resident in Penticton, was held in the office of Wor. Bro. J.R. Mitchell on Main Street to discuss the possibilities of forming a lodge. Those present were: Wor. Bro. G.L. Estabrooks, Wor. Bro. J.R. Mitchell, Wor. Bro. John A. Cleland, Bro. J. Kirkpatrick, C.A.C. Steward E.O. DeLong, E.W. Mutch, L.P. Evarts and E. Lee. At this meeting it was decided if the necessary permission of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia could be secured, to organize a Lodge under the name of “Okanagan Lodge”.

The first official meeting of Okanagan Lodge was held in the room known as the J.D. McDonald Hall, which became the Lodge room for several years. It was located on the east side of what is now known as the 400 Block on Main Street, just south of the corner now occupied by a drug store. At this meeting Wor. Bro. Rev. John A. Cleland was elected as first Worshipful Master, but at a subsequent meeting on April 26th, he asked to be relieved of the office due to pressure of work in St. Saviour’s Anglican Parish, to which he has just recently been appointed. Wor. Bro. Estabrooks, who had been one of the principal moving figures in those first steps of Masonry in Penticton, was unanimously chosen as Worshipful Master.

Now know ye that by virtue of Power and Authority in us vested we do by these presents grant permission to the said brethren to meet as a Lodge of Freemasons at the town of Penticton the first Wednesday in each month (until such time as a Warrant of Constitution shall be granted by Grand Lodge or this Dispensation be revoked) and to admit members by ballot for the degrees recognized and practiced by Grand Lodge and we do hereby appoint – George L. Estabrooks, P.M. Wor. Master, J.R. Mitchell, P.M. Senior Warden, E.O. On June 3rd, 1908, all being in readiness and letters of Dispensation having been granted by the Most Wor. Grand Master, authorizing the formation of the Lodge, the ceremony of Institution was conducted by Rt. Wor. Bro. F.H. Barnes, D.D.G.M. District No. 9. On this occasion many visiting brethren were in attendance from Armstrong, Enderby, Vernon, Kelowna and Hedley.

A silver mounted Gavel made from the wood of a cherry tree planted in 1865 on the Estate of the Southern Okanagan Land Company, formerly the Ellis Ranch, was presented by Bro. L.W. Shatford, M.L.A. who expressed the hope that the antiquity, vigor and wealth of good fruit suggested by the tree from which the gavel was produced, might prove to be prophetic of the future great work to be accomplished by the newly instituted Lodge.

Also presented at this meeting were two swords with scabbards by Bro. W.M. Jermyn, Charter Member. The swords are relics of the Peninsular War (1807 -1814) and were presented by Bro. Jermyn with the expressed hope that as they had been originally drawn in defence of Freedom, their presence in the Lodge, besides answering the purposes of the Tyler and the Inner Guard, would serve to recall to the brethren that Freemasonry has ever stood for Freedom, and in all battles against Tyranny, Masons have ever been found championing the side of Right.

1909

On May 5th, 1909 it was decided to change the name, and Okanagan Lodge became Orion Lodge. The change was made in order to give it a more distinctive name and one with more Masonic appellation, and also to avoid any confusion with a lodge of similar name south of the border.

On July 7th, 1909 Orion Lodge was formally constituted by warrant of the Grand Lodge. On this occasion the Grand Lodge was represented by Rt. Wor. Bro. B.F. Boyce, D.D.G.M. District No. 9, and Rt. Wor. Bro. J.F. Burns, the Grand Master at the time being Most Wor. Bro. H.N. Rich. The officers-elect of the newly constituted lodge were duly installed in their respective chairs. Thus commenced a new stage in the history of the Lodge.

1910

A Grand Masonic Ball, which was designed by the promoters to mark the inauguration of Freemasonry in Penticton on its social side, was carried out with brilliant success on January 7th, 1910.

On May 20th, 1910 an emergent communication was held for the purpose of holding a Memorial service to the late Most Gracious King Edward VII, at one time the Noble and Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England. The brethren proceeded to St. Saviour’s Church where the Memorial Service was conducted by the Chaplain.

At the regular communication held on Sept. 6th, 1910, Wor. Bro. G.L. Estabrooks was duly installed as District Deputy Grand Master, District No. 9, the ceremony being performed by the Past D.D.G.M. Rt. Wor. Bro. B.F. Boyce.

1911

Early in the year 1911, a movement was inaugurated for the selection and purchase of a suitable site for a lodge building. The committee ascertained that it would be possible to purchase the building on Main Street in which the lodge had met from the time of Institution. The property was finally bought by a number of the brethren acting jointly with the understanding that if at any future time the Lodge wished to purchase it, this could be done at the price paid by the original purchasers.

1912

On October 26, 1912 the lodge convened in emergent communication for the purpose of performing the funeral rites for the late brother L.P. Evarts, a Charter member. This was the first occasion in which the lodge performed this duty for one of its own members.

1914

At the communication held on October 6, 1914 the existence of war was brought home to the Lodge by the presence in the Lodge for the last time before going forth as a volunteer in the service of King and Country of Bro. W. Smith. The Worshipful Master, Wor. Bro. E.W. Mutch, in the name of the Lodge, wished the brother Godspeed and a safe return. Bro. Smith was the first of the members of Orion Lodge who volunteered for active service in the Great War. Others followed in quick succession and it was soon apparent that in the tremendous fight of the freedom-loving nations of the world against the advance of tyranny and oppression, the Lodge would be worthily represented. The following are the names of the brethren who enlisted for active service: William Smith, W.C. Bate, C.A.C. Steward, J.C. Dufresne, J.H. McCoy, G.S. Clarke, G.R. Mason, and F.H. Nicholls.

1915

In 1915 a public hospital was erected in Penticton and it was decided by the Lodge that it would be in line with historic precedent and the benevolent spirit of Freemasonry to have some definite share as a lodge in the noble work. Consequently it was agreed to furnish a ward in the new hospital. This work was carried out by subscription of the members of the Lodge.

On October 5, 1915 Wor. Bro. F.W. Andrew of Summerland was installed in the office of Grand Steward by R.W. Bro. J. Kirkpatrick. At this meeting a number of brethren of Summerland Lodge were in attendance. The relations between these two lodges have always been particularly pleasant, frequent interchange of visits of this nature witnessing to the cordial feelings which exist between them.

1918

Flu epidemic banned regular communication of November 1918.

At the regular communication of the Lodge held on December 5, 1918 the brethren gave thanks to the Supreme Ruler of the Universe for the termination of the Great War which had been waged for a period of four years and four months, and at the request of the Grand Master the Lodge as a body attended a special service of thanksgiving in St. Saviour’s Church on Sunday, December 8.

One feature of special importance at the meeting of October 7, 1918 was the welcome which was accorded to those brethren of the Lodge who had returned from the service of their King and country on the battlefields of Europe. Feeling reference was made regarding one of their number who made the supreme sacrifice – Brother J.H. McCoy.

1919

On November 4, 1919 Wor. Bro. Mutch gave an interesting account of a visit made by a number of the brethren to Aurora Lodge, Oroville, Washington and expressed appreciation of the extremely cordial and fraternal reception accorded to the visitors by their American brethren.

1920

The story of Orion Lodge up to this point covers the first decade of its progress and is compiled from history written by Wor. Bro. Rev. J.A. Cleland and deals with the formative period of the life of the lodge. The narrative for the twenties, thirties and forties would of necessity carry the account into the more mature years, detailing the steady growth of the Lodge, touching upon some of the vicissitudes which would confront it revealing some of the highlights of its development. From 1920 to 1949 this history is compiled from notes made by Right Wor. Bro. R.J. McDougall and following are some of the remarks he made when he took over the task in 1920.

“Orion Lodge, like the community of Penticton in which it lived, saw its ups and downs in the forty years of its constitution up to 1949. Yet through all ran the golden thread of Masonic purpose to foster the ideals of the Craft, to make the good men who joined its ranks better men for having come within its influence. The early twenties in Penticton and to an even greater extent, the thirties, were periods of depressed conditions, but throughout them all, Orion Lodge never looked back. It did not stagnate, but year after year saw new applicants knocking at its door seeking Light. It was in 1920 arrangements were set foot to obtain photographs of Past Masters for display in the Lodge Room.”

The growing strength of the Lodge was evidenced by a continuance of membership applications and a growing ambition by the appointment of a committee in July 1920 to look into the matter of new lodge premises. This committee reported that a suitable building could be erected on Main Street for $12,000, or a less pretentious edifice on a side street for $8,000. The Lodge concluded not to proceed with erection of a new edifice, but nevertheless was determined to have larger quarters. Brother Charles Greer came to the rescue by constructing a two-story concrete building immediately south of the lodge room in the McDonald block and rented to the Lodge the entire top floor, which had been designed especially for lodge purposes.

1922

Accordingly, on April 4th, 1922 the Lodge found itself ensconced in the Greer Block. There were 150 present on the occasion including many visitors from Washington State.

1923

For the first time a Board of General Purposes to handle much of the Lodge routine business was set up for Orion in January, 1923.

On June 5th, 1923, news came of the desire of Penticton Chapter No. 22 of Royal Arch Masons of British Columbia to hold their meetings in Orion Lodge premises. Permission was readily granted and this arrangement has continued through the years.

1924

Penticton Chapter No. 22 was granted its Charter on September 9, 1924.

In the Autumn of 1924, the Lodge arranged to send a carload of apples to Wor. Bro. R.J. McDougall in Vancouver for distribution through the Masonic Board of Relief. The fruit was donated by the members of local packing houses.

1927

The Lodge at a meeting February 1, 1927 went into the matter of larger space and received a report on a proposed new building, the lease on the Greer Block having expired. The committee recommended development of the Southeast corner of Main Street and Nanaimo Avenue – a property 60’ by 100’– the first suggestion being a building of three storeys. The ground floor would be for stores, the second floor for offices, dining room and kitchen, etc., and the third floor for Masonic purposes only. The estimated cost of a reinforced concrete building 60’ by 80’ was placed at $40,000. It was proposed that the lodge buy shares in a holding company to the extent of $2,000, being the only share owner. $16,000 would be raised by first mortgage and $22,000 additional would be furnished from the sale of six percent debentures. Thus came the start of the project which resulted in a fine two-storey brick building owned and occupied by Orion Lodge. Further examination of costs resulted in a reduction of the building plans from three storeys to two. Otherwise, the project went through much in the manner first suggested.

During the summer of 1927 work on the construction of the Lodge building at Main and Nanaimo had been proceeding and the first meeting in the new home was held on December 6, 1927 with no less than 77 visitors joining lodge members for the occasion. Many compliments were extended to R.W. Bro. H.B. Morley, the guiding genius in the project.

1928

Coming to 1928, we find Wor. Bro. Sam Daines (one of the most active ritualists of the lodge) becoming Secretary, succeeding Rt. Wor. Bro. Morley who was now taking on duties as secretary of the Building Holding company. More references were made at the January 3rd session to the pleasure the members felt at being in their own lodge home. There were references also to the outstanding part which R.W. Bro. Morley had played in creating the new edifice. He was given Honorary Membership with full privileges on March 8th, with a notation being made that the honor was conferred for his “distinguished Masonic services”.

On the evening of December 27th, 1928 at a Joint Installation of Orion, Trepanier and Summerland Lodges, held in Orion, presentation was made to Orion of two splendid and useful pillars for the formal entrance – a gift of Bro. David Robertson of Robertson and Hackett Vancouver.

1930

Of interest in 1930 was the fact that a member of Orion Lodge, R.W. Bro. H.B. Morley had been elevated to the position of Most. Wor. Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of B.C. November 3rd was Past Masters’ Night and the members gathered also to do honor to M.W. Bro. Morley in his new character as Grand Master of the Order in B.C.

1933

A 25th anniversary celebration was held on October 31st, 1933 with 125 brethren present. The occasion commemorated was the Institution of the Lodge on June 3rd, 1908, coupled with the Constitution on July 7th, 1909. Three of the Charter members, R.W. Bro. J. Kirkpatrick, Wor. Bro. J.R. Mitchell and Bro. Dr. R.B. White, were present.

The Secretary of that day commented in his minutes “It is not out of place to offer a word of praise to the Stewards who are always so faithful in their endeavor to provide some tasty morsel for the inner men, which at times must mean quite a little work”.

Apparently, despite general economic conditions, the Masonic Holding Company which managed the Temple building was able to produce a good report for 1933 and its members, Most Wor. Bro. H.B. Morley, Wor. Bro. D.J. Morgan, Wor. Bro. W.T. Blair, and Wor. Bro. S. Daines, together with the Worshipful Master of the Lodge were returned to office.

1935

There was some discussion on April 3, 1935 as to aiding the brethren in Oliver in forming a lodge there. Permission was given for a Lodge of Instruction. General approval was forthcoming for the project and a good report was received by Orion Lodge at its September meeting. Twenty four members had enrolled in the Lodge of Instruction. Orion endorsed the proposal for a Dispensation and made a grant of $500 to aid the new “Southern Gate” Lodge. On November 6th, 1935, the new lodge was instituted at Oliver, there being 115 in attendance, with quite a number of visitors from Washington, as well as other lodges in B.C. Several Orion brethren placed their names upon the membership roll of Southern Gate Lodge.

1936

Orion went for a holiday on Good Friday, April 10, 1936, with 120 Freemasons paying a visit to Riverside Lodge No. 112 at Wenatchee, Washington and proceeding on to view the Grand Coulee Dam project. There were 425 Freemasons registering at Riverside Lodge when Orion exemplified the Master Mason degree.

1937

Wor. Bro. Sam Daines was presented with a scroll on January 3rd, 1937 in testimony of his work for nine years as Lodge Secretary. He took a year off in 1937, but came back in 1938 to serve another 3 years.

1938

To illustrate the vigor and growth of the Lodge it may be mentioned that at the March 3rd, 1938 meeting some discussion arose regarding the possibility of a new temple, or as an alternative it was proposed that the entire upper floor of the present building at Main and Nanaimo be devoted to the use of the lodge, so as to enlarge the scope of its social activities. Two committees were appointed to go into the several ideas. One school of thought was that the lodge should move to a point away from the centre of the city, where parking would be easier and property less expensive. The idea of a new temple moved ahead a step at the meeting on April 5th, when it was arranged to purchase a site at the corner of Martin Street and Orchard Avenue. The property bought consisted of a small frame house on a lot 120’ by 180’ and the consideration was $1800. Another house with considerable adjacent frontage was obtained at a later date. Rental received for these houses took care of taxes so there was no additional expense to the Lodge in holding the property.

1940

Great interest was aroused in letters received in November 1940 from brethren in England telling of the air raids on London. It was noticeable that during this period lodge notices frequently contained some references to the War effort and to Masonic activity in that regard. Thus the brethren found that their lodge life, like their life in the world outside was tremendously influenced by the world-wide and devastating hostilities of the Second Great War. Surplus funds of the lodge were being invested in Victory Bonds from time to time. It is also worthy of note that the dues of members who were on active service were remitted.

1945

On November 6th, 1945 a number of members back from Military service made their appearance at a lodge session and were warmly welcomed. A correct list of members who were on active service in World War II is unfortunately not available at this time.

Note was taken of the fact that for some considerable time the lodge members had been entertained during the hour of refreshment in the ante room, with movie films shown by Bro. J.H. Almack, which were greatly appreciated.

1949

The question of obtaining a new home for the Lodge came before the members in January, 1949. A committee was formed to look into the ways and means of constructing a new building on the property owned by the Lodge on Martin Street and Orchard Avenue, and how the present Lodge building could be altered to accommodate offices. Further discussion occurred in September of the same year. This discussion centered around the proposal to build on Martin Street, and incorporate apartments.

Only one month later, the Temple premises on Main Street were severely damaged by fire. The Lodge was fortunate to be able to hold meeting for a time in the Summerland Lodge room.

1950

In February, 1950, the Lodge decided to proceed with the erection of the new premises on Orchard Avenue. The estimated cost was $110,000. Incorporating an apartment block of six units was deemed to be essential for financing the proposal.

1951

The culmination of this project was achieved in 1951 and an Emergent meeting was held on November 10th to open the new Temple. M.W. Bro. J. Murray Mitchell, Grand Master of the Most Worshipful, The Grand Lodge of British Columbia, attended, and in his address to the Lodge, he paid tribute to the dedicated efforts of M.W. Bro. H.B. Morley and the wisdom and tireless effort of the committee involved in the completion of this outstanding Temple building, which for the period was probably the most up to date Temple in B.C. The Lodge members enthusiastically endorsed this tribute.

In outlining the history of this outstanding achievement, M.W. Bro. Morley paid tribute to Bro. J.W. Dalrymple, a member of Orion, for completing the contract in such an able manner.

1952

As a result of the increase in population in Penticton, there was a feeling that the area could support a second Masonic Lodge and on February 5th, 1952, at a regular meeting of Orion Lodge, a motion expressing its approval of a new Lodge, using the American form of ritual and meeting on the second Friday each month, was unanimously adopted. In due course, Penticton Lodge No. 147 was constituted and some members of Orion became Charter members of No. 147.

1953

On April 14th, 1953, Orion Lodge members decided to sell the former Lodge building at Main Street and Nanaimo Avenue to the Royal Bank of Canada for $107,500. It has since been demolished and a new Royal Bank building constructed on the site.

1955

A new lodge to be named “Prince Charles” was to be instituted at Kelowna, BC on April 25th, 1955 and Orion members were invited to attend.

On March 12th, 1955, an R.C.M.P. Degree team from the Fraser Valley, under the direction of Wor. Bro. E.H.R. Nesbitt, Sgt. Conferred the M.M. degree, the candidate being Bro. Lloyd F. French of Trepanier Lodge No. 83 Peachland. The Degree Team wore their scarlet uniforms and presented a thrilling spectacle. Orion Lodge was host for the occasion. This was one of a number of instances when the R.C.M.P. team performed.

In December, 1955, Bro. E.O. Atkinson, who was the first candidate to be initiated into the Lodge, was laid to rest. Members of the Lodge attended the funeral at the Anglican Church.

1958

On September 27th, 1958, a Past Masters’ night was held to exemplify the M.M. Degree. Noteworthy guests on this occasion were members of Grand Coulee Lodge No. 120, Wilbur Lodge No. 81, Clarke Lodge No. 203 of Camas, all from the state of Washington, U.S.A. Also from Oklahoma, Allen Lodge No. 81, Almira Lodge No. 127 and Aetna Lodge No. 28. Keystone Lodge of South Dakota was also represented.

1959

A unique ceremony was held in the Lodge on February 17th, 1959, when W. Bro. H.W. Shaw Sr. raised his son Harry to the sublime degree. As the candidate’s Grandfather had also been a member of Orion, the occasion was a memorable one.

An Emergent meeting was held on October 10th, 1959, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Lodge. On this occasion, W. Bro. Sam Daines, a former Secretary of the Lodge, and now Secretary of Landmark Lodge No. 129, Vancouver, presented to Orion a beautiful cover for the Altar, and markers for the volume of the Sacred Law, made by his own hands. W. Bro. Lipsett, Master of Landmark Lodge then presented a gavel to Orion, to replace the famous cherry wood gavel, which had been presented to the Lodge by Bro. L.W. Shatford M.L.A. on June 3rd, 1908. The fifty-year-old gavel was then placed in the archives of Orion Lodge. The Lodge expressed their appreciation to W. Bro. Lyall Chambers, who had arranged the anniversary programme.

1960

Orion Lodge was host to the Grand Lodge of British Columbia on June 23rd and 24th, 1960, for the occasion of the annual convocation of the Grand Lodge. In order to accommodate the large number of brethren present, the convocation was held in the High School Auditorium. Grand Lodge was also held in Penticton in 1953, 1975, 1983 and 2003.

The late V.W. Bro. R.H. Chattey bequeathed the sum of $5,000 to Orion Lodge as Capital for the Benevolent fund.

1961

The installation of officers of Orion was held on December 5th, 1961. W. Bro. Lyall Chambers acting as Installing Master for the seventh time, performed the ceremony with his usual dignity and precision.

1962

W. Bro. P.L. Wiseman was granted Honorary membership in Orion on November 6th, 1962, and the Lodge was reminded at that time that W. Bro. Wiseman acted as Building Superintendent at the building of the Lodge edifice, and had donated his valuable services with skill and dedication in this regard. On November 2nd, 1965, W. Bro. John Hope retired as Secretary, after having fulfilled that office in a very capable manner for eighteen years. The Lodge recognized W. Bro. Hope’s faithful service when a “John Hope” night was held at a later date. On this occasion, W. Bro. Hope was presented with a TV set and a scroll. The scroll was presented on behalf of the eighteen Masters who had served during the years of W. Bro. Hope’s term as Secretary, and all of the Masters signed the scroll.

1963

In the Installation ceremonies held in December, 1963, Wor. Bro. W.E.G. Stuart (who was Master of Orion in 1955) installed his son, Bro. W.M. Stuart, as Master of Orion for 1964.

1966

There was another unique installation in December, 1966, when Wor. Bro. R.J. Jackson (who was Master of Orion in 1961) installed his father, Bro. W.E. Jackson, as Master of Orion for 1967.

1967

The year was 1967. January 17th, being Burns night, after the Lodge was closed, the memory of “Robbie” was celebrated in the social hour. The occasion was complete with a piper, kilts and, of course, the “haggis”.

At the regular February meeting W. Bro. Battye told the Lodge of the passing of Bro. V. McFarlane, an absent member of the Lodge for many years. Bro. McFarlane had left the sum of $100 to the Lodge. In this regard, it was decided that a new Altar and new tops for the Wands would be purchased with this gift.

On October 3rd, after the Lodge was closed, a group of the members enacted a play entitled “St. Anne’s Lodge of June Fifth – 1845”. This play was thoroughly enjoyed by the members present.

1968

A presentation was made to R.W. Bro. Lyall Chambers on April 2, 1968 on the completion of his year as D.D.G.M. The presentation of an Apron was made by R.W. Bro. F.E. Atkinson, D.D.G.M., on behalf of Orion.

An Emergent meeting was held on September 28, 1968, and on this occasion the Lodge entertained members of Grand Coulee Dam Lodge No. 120. Entering the Lodge to the skirl of the pipes, the Seaforth Degree team from Trinity Lodge No. 98 and King George Lodge No. 129 of Vancouver, took the chairs and exemplified the M.M. Degree. Those present thoroughly enjoyed the degree work and accorded the degree team a standing ovation. R.W. Bro. Captn. Begg then presented an inscribed plaque to the Lodge.

1969

On October 11th, 1969, Orion celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of the institution of the Lodge. M.W. Bro. Wallace McRae, Grand Master was unable to attend. He was represented by R.W. Bro. J.W. Maddock, D.D.G.M. of District No. 10. Amongst the guests were members of Grand Coulee Dam Lodge. A new volume of the Sacred Law and Square and Compass were presented to the Lodge by W. Bro. C. Battye, on behalf of the Past Masters. W. Bro. Steele presented a Low Twelve Bell.

1970

A pleasant ceremony of Degree Work was enjoyed by the members at the regular meeting of the Lodge on December 1, 1970, when W. Bro. H.W. Shaw Sr. in the chair as Installing Master, installed his son Bro. Harry Shaw Jr. as Master of Orion for the year 1971.

In October, 1969, congratulations of the brethren were extended to R.W. Bro. L.C. Chambers on his appointment to the 33rd Degree.

Congratulations were also extended to V.W. Bro. P.L. Wiseman on his appointment to the 33rd Degree in September 1983.

1974

1974 to 1984 were years of quiet progress in the affairs of Orion Lodge. Many worthy citizens were initiated into the Lodge, and a number of brethren affiliated. Some of these new members took an active part in degree work and added strength to the Lodge.

The members of the Lodge were saddened many times by the passing of brethren who had retained their membership for many years, and who had contributed in a worthwhile manner to the progress and wellbeing of the Lodge.

1977

Many fraternal visits have been exchanged between the members of Orion Lodge and the members of Grand Coulee Dam Lodge No. 120 of the Grand Registry of the Grand Lodge of the State of Washington, U.S.A. – the first of these friendly visits occurring in 1936. Such a visit was enjoyed on April 7th, 1977, when W. Bro. Samsel, supported by worthy brethren from several States and members of his own Lodge, were guests of Orion. This visit was returned in September of the same year when a delegation from Orion visited Grand Coulee.

1978

In May, 1978, three brethren of Orion called at his home to present a fifty year pin to W. Bro. E.A. Titchmarsh, as W. Bro. Titchmarsh was unable to attend the lodge due to ill health. Also in that year, a sixty year bar was presented to Bro. F.P. McPherson.

1979

In December, 1979, W. Bro. Don. Steele retired as Secretary of the Lodge, after serving in that capacity for 14 years. When the Lodge convened in January, 1980, the Lodge indicated their appreciation of W. Bro. Steele’s efficient and dedicated service by a token gift. At this time W. Bro. C.G. Woodbridge, having been duly elected as Secretary, assumed his duties as such.

1980s

For a number of years [early 1980s], the Lodge has been fortunate in that V.W. Bro. Fred Arnott of Penticton Lodge No. 147 has on many occasions acted as Organist in Orion.

 The Building

In order to take care of proposed building plans, the Penticton Masonic Holding Company was set up in 1927 with five Directors – the Wor. Master, the Senior Warden, the two Trustees and the Treasurer of the Lodge.

In 1935, the name was changed to Penticton Masonic Temple Association and was set up with the following officers: Three to be elected at large with the Wor. Master, Senior Warden and Secretary of the lodge acting during their term of office. This was a very active body leading up to, and during, the construction of the present Lodge room on Orchard Avenue. The members are to be congratulated on the results of the many hours of labor they put in.

The Lodge room is being made good use of with regular meetings being held by Orion Lodge No. 51, Penticton Lodge No. 147, Penticton Chapter No. 22 Royal Arch Masons, Penticton Lodge of Perfection, Penticton Chapter of Rose Croix, Edina Chapter No. 33 Order of Eastern Star and Penticton Bethel No. 16 Order of Job’s Daughters. The kitchen and hall on the main floor are rented to outside groups when not required for Lodge purposes, and the six apartments are steadily occupied.

1984

Up to this date [1984], one of our members, in the person of Most. Wor. Bro. H.B. Morley, had reached the position of Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia, 1931-32.

Brethren

“So mote it be.”

Worshipful Master

“Bro. Treasurer, it has been the custom of the craft on occasions such as this, to deposit in a stone cavity, certain memorials of the period, that in years to come, an enduring record may be found by succeeding generations, to bear testimony of the fidelity, elements and circumstances of this, our 75th Anniversary. Has such a deposit been prepared?”

Treasurer

“It has, Worshipful Master, and the various articles of which it is composed are safely enclosed in the time capsule before you.”

Worshipful Master

“Brother Secretary, you will read the record of the contents in the capsule.”

Secretary

Reads the list.

At that time, it will be in order to take such action as the brethren of the lodge shall direct.”

Later in the evening a banquet was held with a good attendance, a great time was enjoyed by all.

*

The next 25 years started out with a good membership for Orion, we saw a fair amount of new candidates go through the degrees and membership was also boosted with affiliated members, some from the U.K., South Africa, Latvia, Germany and one from Papua, New Guinea which emphasizes how universal Masonry is. As we approached the end of the century there was a definite decrease in membership, due to many of our members passing away and the inability to attract young men to the craft, this was not just Freemasonry, all organizations were having the same problems, but with the quality of members we have today (2009) although low in numbers will see Orion survive for many years to come.

To encourage family participation in the Lodge, events were held each year including Church Parades, Family Social Nights, Summer Picnics, Installation Dinner and Dances and these were open to all family members and friends. Many were catered by members of the Order of The Eastern Star with the help of members of Jobs Daughters.

1986

As is usual the first Social event of the year was a well attended Family Night in March. With musical entertainment provided by 20 band members, students of Bro. Ron Smuin. The band later went on to Expo 86 in Vancouver.

A 50 year pin was presented to W. Bro. Clem Battye and Bro. Saunders and a 60 year pin presented to Bro. Mackay.

1987

A 50 year pin was presented to Brother Jack Dalrymple and a 60 year pin to Brother Bowsfield. The presentation took place at the Members homes by R.W. Bro. Don Steele joined by several members and friends.

A Historic Night was held in June with all the Porch Books and other interesting items on display, this was well received by the members especially the older ones reminiscing with each other and sharing memories.

The 100th anniversary of Mountain Lodge No. 11 in Golden was held in September with a good representation of Members from Orion.

The Wall Hanging that hangs above the stairway in our present hall was presented to the Lodge by the W. Bro. S.G.Sillett family. It was this year that the tradition of giving Widows Pins started.

1990

On January 22, 1990 following the regular communication an Honour Night was held for W. Bro. Cyril Woodbridge to honour him for ten years of loyal and dedicated service as secretary of Orion Lodge.

Following the introduction of the head table, it immediately became clear that this was not just a gathering to honour our secretary, but a carefully contrived plot to “roast” him; five of the Past Masters that “served” him during his “reign” were present and spoke of some of the highlights that occurred during their term of office. W. Bro. Charles Stuckel (W.M.1980), the first of Cyril’s protégés, spoke of having to recruit Cyril for the job. He was then joined by W. Bro. Hugh Ferster in presenting a humorous skit titled “The Initiation of a Master by Secretary W. Bro. Woodbridge”. This was enjoyed by all .W.Bro.’s Elder (83), Batten (87), Smuin (88), and Thomas (89), related tales concerning Cyril’s quick wit and frugal ways. W. Bro. Ferster read a moving letter of tribute which was received from W. Bro. Arthur Fuller, a Past Master of Orion and old time friend of W. Bro. Woodbridge.W. Bro. Woodbridge, true to form, retaliated on the story tellers, by relating some of his own recollections.

On behalf of the Brethren of Orion Lodge, W. Bro. Stuckel presented Cyril with an Italian Marble Pen & Calendar Desk Set; W. Bro. Coates presented him with a framed scroll acknowledging his service to the Lodge.

After a regular meeting in March, a surprise Birthday cake was presented to W. Bro. Clem Battye to celebrate his 90th Birthday. There were a good number of Brethren in attendance.

A Fraternal Visit was made to Grand Coulee Lodge #120 F&AM on September 22nd with 27 Masons, 2 Visitors and 25 Ladies a total of 54. Harry Shaw Sr. at the age of 91 years was among the Members of Orion. A good time was had by all.

1991

This was a busy year. A Charity Dinner and Dance, a joint fund raiser between the Knights of Columbus, Orion 51 and Penticton Lodge 147, was held on February 16th. This was well attended, with the proceeds going to the Penticton Regional Hospital and the Cancer Car Project. This was the first of several such events.

This year saw the first of several years with members volunteering at the local Blood Donor Clinic.

Honorary Memberships were granted to W. Bro. Harold Murray and W. Bro. Ken McKenzie.

The painting titled “Lodge Night” which hangs in the foyer of the Lodge was presented to Orion Lodge by Bro. Randy Manuel on behalf of himself and his Family.

Eight members of Grand Coulee Lodge and their guests were welcomed for a fraternal visit on September 14th. They presented W. Bro. Gordon Collins with a commemorative flag of the United States, with a certificate stating that it had flown over the United States Capitol.

1992

Declining membership was beginning to cause some concern – a problem being experienced by many other Lodges and service clubs. Phone committees were formed to encourage members to attend Lodge.

A Buddy Night was held, a social evening where members invite prospective candidates to attend and Freemasonry is explained and questions are answered, this resulted in several new members.

In March Bro’s Ed Cline; Gordon Collins; Don Steele and Bill Batten manned the telephones at the 12th Annual O.S.N.S. Share-A-Smile Marathon, W. Bro. Collins received a Bears & Blocks Pin for being the top panelist, raising the most donations during the 45 minute time slot.

The 1992 meeting of The Columbia Past Masters Association was held at the Masonic Temple on May 9th. The association is made up of Past Masters of The Columbia Basin in Washington State and Past Masters from the Southern Interior of B.C.

Bro. Robert Shaw, a resident of the Westview Residence celebrated his 100th birthday. Several members of Orion attended his birthday party held at the residence. They enjoyed sharing his birthday cake, which was prepared by the staff.

1993

An invitation was received from Grand Coulee lodge to attend the reception of The Grand Master of Montana, Most Worshipful Brother Clarence Carter (a member of Grand Coulee Lodge No. 120 F&AM) accompanied by The Grand Master of Washington State, Most Worshipful Brother Kenneth S. Robinson, to be held in September.

A volunteer work party removed the old carpet from the Lodge Room, built the raised sitting area on the sidelines in preparation for the installation of new carpet.

1994

An Emergent Communication was held on October 8th to confer the Fellowcraft Degree on Bro. Taylor and Bro. Vogt, and to receive visiting Brethren from Grand Coulee Lodge on their fraternal visit to Orion.

W. Bro. Clem Battye, age 94, our oldest Past Master of Orion Lodge who attended the meeting to welcome our visitors from Grand Coulee. W. Bro Battye, addressing the two Entered Apprentices and the visitors, said the history of the fraternal visits between our two Lodges was still very clear in his memory.

He was raised on Tuesday, April 7th, 1936 and on the following Saturday April 11th, the Degree Team from Orion lodge went to Riverside Lodge No. 112 at Wenatchee Wash., to emulate the M.M. Degree, and he was chosen to be the Candidate. There were 425 Freemasons registering at Riverside Lodge that day.

At the festive table following the meeting, Masons from the Grand Coulee Dam Lodge No.120 invited the Members from Orion Lodge to visit them in Grand Coulee the following day, Sunday April 12th. Being a Sunday, the Lodge was not opened, however, the Brethren of Grand Coulee Lodge received them and took them on an extensive tour of the dam which was under construction. This was followed by a social and lunch. These visits have continued for the last 58 years with few exceptions, each Lodge taking turns visiting the other on alternate years.

1995

J. W. Bro. Thom Howells held a Robbie Burns evening after our regular January communication, and as it was advertised “Wi a few trimmins an a Haggis”.

February of this year saw another very successful joint Charity Dinner and Dance held between the two Masonic Lodges and The Knights of Columbus, with proceeds in the amount of $3,600.00 going to the Penticton Regional Hospital and $4,600.00 going to the Masonic Cancer Car Project.

The Columbia Past Masters Association meeting was held on April 23rd at Grand Coulee.

This year saw the beginning of fundraising for The Okanagan Cancer Car Project. Freemasons in conjunction with The Canadian Cancer Society were already providing free transportation for cancer patients in the Lower Mainland to the Vancouver Cancer Clinic. This was later expanded to Vancouver Island, and 1998 will see the opening of a Cancer Clinic in Kelowna.

A Fraternal visit to Grand Coulee to attend a “Table Lodge” was well supported. Followed by a tour of the dam, several of our members were taken inside one of the Penstocks that was shutdown for servicing. This was quite an experience. Later in the evening we were treated to a spectacular Laser Show on the front of the dam.

In June W. Bro. Steve Moodie was honored on his 70 year anniversary in Freemasonry. At the same time Honorary Memberships were awarded to:

V. W. Bro. A. Fuller, Worshipful Master 1959

W. Bro. C. McLeod 1965

W. Bro. D. Vass 1968

W. Bro. H. Shaw 1971

W. Bro. M. Ruud 1973

W. Bro. M. Barry 1975.

A 60 year pin was awarded to W. Bro. Clem Battye at our October communication.

1996

At our January meeting W. Bro. Clem Battye, age 96, who is known locally for poems that he has written, entertained the Members by reading some of his works.

W. Bro. Hugh Ferster was appointed Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia.

W. Bro. Lloyd Coates was appointed District Deputy Grand Master, District No. 10.

The Fraternal visit of Grand Coulee Lodge to Orion was cancelled due to forest fires in their area.

S.W. Bro. Thom Howell was unexpectedly transferred to the coast. W. Bro. Bill Batten assumed the chair of S.W. at the November election of officers. He was elected as Worshipful Master for 1997. The first Past Master of Orion to assume the Worshipful Master’s chair for the second time, he was later followed by W. Bro. Steve Ward ( 2007) and V.W. Bro. Earl Cornish (2008).

1997

The April meeting was advertised as “A Historic Night”, after a short business meeting the Lodge was put at rest and everyone retired to the social hall where all the Porch Books from 1908 to the present (along with other memorabilia) was on display. A presentation on the history of Orion Lodge was given by W. Bro. Clyde McLeod, our historian, followed by a talk by Bro. Randy Manuel, Penticton Museum curator. His stories of the affect that Orion Lodge has had on the history of Penticton made for a very interesting evening.

R. W. Bro. Don Steele was presented with a Secretary Emeritus Certificate in recognition of his 14 years as Secretary of the Lodge, ( 1965 - 1979)

1998

This year marked the 150th anniversary of Multnomah Lodge No 1. in Oregon City, Oregon. W. Bro. The Rev. John A. Cleland (a charter member of Okanagan Lodge, later to become Orion Lodge) was transferred to Oregon City and later was elected Worshipful Master of Multnomah Lodge, No. 1.

This year the Okanagan Cancer Car Project began with a seven seat van in Kamloops and another in Penticton to provide free transportation for cancer patients to the new Cancer Clinic in Kelowna. Later, another van was added in Vernon and a car in Kelowna. There has been an average of forty volunteer drivers for this very worthwhile program, made up of Masons, non-masons both men and women.

1999

On September 7th a Presentation of new Wardens Columns and Cuffs was made to the Lodge. They were donated to the Lodge by the late Brother W. Bro. Clement Battye. The columns were hand-crafted by M.W. Bro. William Ferguson of Salmon Arm, BC and the cuffs were obtained from Victoria Regalia in Scotland.

The Columns were presented to the Wardens this evening and the cuffs are to be presented during our 100th Anniversary celebration in 2009.

A Close of Century Observance was held on December 4th, 1999. It marked the last meeting of Orion Lodge in the 20th Century. The last two Worshipful Masters of the Century, W. Bro. Mark Hudson and W. Bro. Fred Marjaram were called upon to place their photographs on the South Wall of the Lodge. A Roll Call of all Past Masters was then read, followed by Grand Honours to all Past Masters.

The 100th Anniversary of King Edward Lodge in Greenwood was celebrated in October. Several members of Orion attended, including R.Wor. Jim Floyd, our present Tyler, King Edward Lodge being his Mother Lodge.

W. Bro. Clem Battye passed to The Grand Lodge above May 12th, 1999 at the age of ninety-nine.

2002

V.W. Bro. Hugh Ferster was granted Honorary Membership in Orion Lodge. This was the year that the Mentor Program was started to mentor new candidates, and it has proved quite successful. Bro. James Reid was presented with his 50 year pin at his home. W. Bro. Hudson presented the Lodge with an engraved Brass Trowel on behalf of Bro. Clarke Wood of Gothic Lodge # 608 of Lindsey Ontario.

2003

A motion had been made and passed to change the date of Installation of Officers from December to June of each year. R. Wor. James Floyd was granted Honorary Membership at a regular meeting in May. The June meeting was a Daylight Meeting, a first for Orion. It gives older members a chance to attend Lodge, and it was quite successful.

V. Wor. Bro. Harry Shaw was appointed as District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 10 at the Grand Lodge Sessions in June. W. Bro. Kerr organized a very successful fishing trip to a local lake, which he continued to do for several successive years. This was the first year of publishing a Lodge newsletter, “The Cable Tow”, thanks to the hard work of R.W. Bro. Roy Gregory. It has proven so successful that it is being requested by other Lodges in the district and beyond.

A Family Open House Party was held on December 6th. At the same time, Bro. Steve Moodie (who was in attendance) celebrated his 100th Birthday. Unfortunately Bro. Steve passed away the following May.

2004

Installation of Officers was held for the first time in June.

W. Bro. Gordon Collins was awarded Honorary Life Membership. And on a sad note R. W. Bro. James Floyd passed away suddenly. He had held the office of Tyler for over 34 years.

A Christmas fair was held on December 4th in the social hall. Proceeds were $725.00 with $360.00 going to the Cancer Car Project and $365 going to the Building Association.

2005

Installation of officers was held on June 4th, followed by dinner at Theo’s Restaurant. A Pub Night was held in October which again proved very popular. In fact, another was planned for the following April.

W. Bro. Batten, Chairman of the Building Association, reported that talks had been initiated with Penticton Lodge 147 on joint ownership of the building. Bro. Norm Sterling was presented with his 50 year pin at the official visit of M.W. Bro. D. McSween at Summerland on April 4th.

A motion was introduced to move Orion’s Installation of Officers back to the first Saturday in December. It passed.

W. Bro. Earl Cornish was installed as Grand Superintendent of Works of The Grand Lodge of B.C. at the Grand Lodge sessions in June.

2006

On September 29th, due to financial problems, the Masonic Hall was sold. The upper floor of the building (consisting of the Lodge Room, Library, Foyer and small Kitchen) was leased back for a period of three years.

The building was built in 1951 by Orion Lodge and had provided the Masonic Family in the area a place to meet for 55 years as well as providing a Social Hall for rent to the community where many weddings, dinners, dances and other social events were held over the years.

W. Bro. Clyde McLeod was presented with his 50 year jewel. He passed away early in 2007.

Installation of Officers was once again held in December.

2007

W. Bro. Ward assumed the Office of Worshipful Master for the second time, his first term being in 1986.

As 2009 will be the centennial year of Orion 51, a Centennial committee was formed to make preparations for a celebration of 100 years in The City of Penticton that will take place on July 11th and 12th, 2009. Bro. Patrick Beaven headed up this committee.

2008

V.W. Bro. Cornish has the distinction of being the third Past Master to take the Chair for a second term.

An historic special meeting was called on September 6, 2008 of all members of Orion Lodge by the Penticton Masonic Building Association to discuss changes to the constitution of the association – changes that would allow any Lodge or Concordant Associations that hold meetings in a common building either owned or rented by the P.M.B.A. to become full members of the P.M.B.A.. A motion was made and seconded, and a vote was taken. The motion passed. At this time, membership is made up of Orion Lodge 51, Penticton Lodge 147 and Edina Chapter 33 of the Eastern Star. With three members from each body forming the Board of Directors. This was the first significant change to the Constitution since the association was formed in 1935.

Bro. Frank McConnell received his 50 year jewel at his home.

At the regular meeting in September R.Wor. Bro. Don Hyslop (a member of Southern Gate Lodge in Oliver, and a guest organist for many years at Orion’s meetings) was granted Honorary Membership.

The Centennial Committee was kept busy continuing to make preparations for 2009.

All 25 year pins were reissued to those Brethren that qualified.

At the Installation of Officers held on December 6th, W. Bro. Patrick Beaven was installed as Worshipful Master for 2009. He will be the 94th Worshipful Master of Orion in the last 100 years. The gavel he used was mentioned in the beginning of this book, it is a silver mounted gavel made from the wood of a cherry tree from the Estate of the Southern Okanagan Land Company, formally the Ellis Ranch and was presented to the Lodge by Bro. L.W. Shatford M.L.A. in 1908.

2009

This being Orion’s centennial year, many events are being planned with the main celebration taking place on July 11th and 12th. They include an exhibit of Lodge artifacts (including the porch books and memorabilia collected over the past 100 years) and a Ceremony of Opening the Time Capsule that was deposited in the ground outside the Lodge in 1984. This will take place at 1:00pm on the Saturday. Later, there will be Past Masters reception, followed by a Formal Dinner. A Devotional Service will be held in the Lodge Room on Sunday morning followed by a pancake breakfast at the Kerr residence. At 10:00 am a new Time Capsule will be prepared and deposited in the Lodge Room to be opened in the year 2034. As well, a program has been put together for the women.

Bro. Don Kain will be presented with his 60 year pin. As well, R.W. Bro. Harry Shaw will receive his 50 year pin, plus a Lewis Jewel, being the son of the late W. Bro. Harry Shaw Sr.

Members of Orion have not been unmindful of their responsibilities as citizens of the community in which they live, as evidenced by the following list of members who served the Town and City of Penticton in the Municipal Government as Reeve or Mayor, Councilor or Alderman, also as M.L.A. or M.P.
